Lower Falls, of Yellowstone National Park-
The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, is by far the most popular waterfall in Yellowstone National Park. Its water falls some 308 feet with a volume that ensures it is heard throughout the canyon and it can also be seen throughout the year. Most important of all is the majestic setting in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. The setting I chose to paint of the Lower Falls, is from Artist Point, which provides a front on view with balls of mist as the water roars down the canyon. Artist Point is an appropriately named view point for a beautiful waterfall.
We recently visited Lower Falls, the biggest and most famous waterfall in Yellowstone National Park. In fact, the 308 foot tall waterfall is the second most photographed place in the park, with the Old Faithful Geyser being the first. Of the several viewing areas for the Lower Falls, I loved this view from Artist's Point because it allowed a full view of the falls against the gorgeous yellow walls of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. Although these canyon walls were created by hotter eating on volcanic rock, it was not these colors that provided the Parks name. The park was named by Minnertaree Indians from the yellow banks of the Missouri River. French trappers translated their language as roche jaune or yellow stone.
From an artist's view point the warm colors of the canyon walls against the cool blues of the falling water are the perfect set up for a lovely painting. Can you feel the spray? Hear the roar of the falls? If you haven't visited Yellowstone we highly recommend a trip to see this magnificent place!
