Parker River National Wildlife Refuge resides on Plum Island on the coast of Massachusetts. This beautiful marsh is a transition site between the ocean and the land. It is teeming with birds, plants and wildlife that are tough enough to survive in an ever changing environment. Marshes are located close enough to the shoreline that the motion of the tide affect them. Sometimes they are covered in water and sometimes the water has receded. Brackish water, a mixture of salt and fresh water, also affects the type of plants and animals living in the marsh. Plants need to be resilient to salt water.
Many amazing birds live year round in the Parker River Refuge. Our favorite spotting was of a beautiful snowy owl, who was sitting on the edge of a sand dune. Snowy owls winter over on the Massachusetts coast and are a wonderful site to see.
